#66 Hang Gliding

Let’s call this my compromise list item. TB and I embark on most of our escapades together. It makes the experiences that much more special if it is a memory we share. With that said, one of the first things on TB’s list was sky diving. I consider myself semi-adventurous, but I have never had any desire to jump out of a perfectly good airplane. I won’t stop him from doing it (won’t encourage it either), but I won’t be joining him when the time comes.

Hang gliding was our compromise. I wanted to feel the sensation of flying, but somehow the kite makes me feel safer. In 2015 I started looking into it for his birthday. It turns out we were only a few short hours from one of the best places in the country to do it! Kitty Hawk, NC- where the Wright brothers took their first flight, we would take our first (hang gliding) flight. I called up Kitty Hawk Kites and booked us.

My youngest at the time had never spent a night away from us, so we took him with us and crossed our fingers we could take turns. We stayed at a charming B&B and make a weekend out of it. The staff at Kitty Hawk Kites were amazing and very laid back. They made no fuss about us bringing a 2 yr old to hang glide. We signed some paperwork, took a quick class, and we were off!

I was flying!! It was less adrenaline-inducing and more peaceful and beautiful. They told us the worst thing you could do is overthink it, so I was pretty much the worst person for the job. But, once you are up there you have no choice but to relax and enjoy. TB was hooked. He wanted to plan to go back every year! We have already been back a few times.

The only thing I can tell you is that you practice on the sand dunes first, which is beautiful, but extremely windy! Tie your hair up and bring eye protection, trust me.

Another great adventure down in the books! It may have even warmed me up to the idea of sky diving…
